Unit 1 – Greetings & Feelings
Pupils learn basic greetings, say how they feel and gain an understanding of how to pronounce Italian words. . They also learn numbers up to 10 and begin to respond to and ask questions about name and age. Children learn some Italian songs, take part in role-plays, and a number of games such as Contro il Topolino (against the rat), and Si o No? (yes or no?) to support long-term memory. To support non-specialists, there are sound files and English translation of all key vocabulary, plus learning activities, questions and correct answers embedded in the PowerPoint presentation.
Unit 2 – Family Members
Pupils continue to practise greetings, learn family member vocabulary, and the verbs ‘’I have – I don’t have’’ (ho– non ho) to say whether or not they have siblings. Children work with colourful flashcards of Disney characters, and creative activities such as family trees and portraits. Children will also learn about masculine and feminine nouns in Italian, and the Italian alphabet getting familiar with some Italian sounds. This unit will inspire to live sustainable lives with families and communities (reduce, reuse and recycle, save energy and water). Unit 3 – Colours & Numbers
Pupils continue to practise prior learning as starter activities and begin to learn the name of the colours. They will be working with many creative activities and will be playing many games. They also learn a song to help memorize key vocabulary, and reinforce their pronunciation of Italian phonics and Doble letters such as: SS – R – G – . Finally, in this unit pupils also learn days of the week, months of the year, and numbers up to 31 to say their birthday in Italian. Unit 4 – Animals
Pupils learn the name of animals in Italian, and explore how animals live in a farm and in a zoo. They will play games such as Guess the Animal, What’s missing, and odd one out to practise these words and reinforce their learning. Children will use numbers and animals together to say how many animals they see using there is/ there are (c’é – ci sono). Finally, they will listen and respond to a story called ‘’I Quattro Amici’’ (The Four Friends) and reinforce knowledge of Italian Phonics contained in animal vocabulary. Children will be also introduced to some endangered species, animals’ habitats, and will learn the importance of protecting and preserving them.
Unit 5 – Food
Pupils learn vocabulary about food and how to make some Italian dishes. They play games such as Word Bingo and Word Tennis to get familiar with their learning and help memory. Children also learn some opinions verbs Mi piace (I like); Non mi piace (I do not like); Amo (I love) to express preferences. Finally, they discuss eating sustainably and shopping wisely by watching videos and learning some vocabulary in the target language. Unit 6 – All About Me
In this unit, pupils learn new ways to greet others, say how they feel and introduce themselves. They begin to respond to and ask questions in Italian about nationality, and the country where they live and come from. They will gain an understanding of the most popular cities of Italy, and its Capital city Rome. Pupils work with real maps of Italy enhancing their Geography knowledge. In this unit, children will also learn about the formal and informal form in Italian, and how to ask known questions such as What’s your name? and How are you? in the formal form.
